how to make a blog

According to Financial Samurai, bloggers today make anywhere from $1000 in their first year to a 7 figure income by year 10. The key to making money from your blog is depending on how you set it up and run it.

If you're looking to start a blog, then you've come to the right place. We are going to go over the simple steps on how to make a blog.

Let's get you started with your blog so you can start making that extra money.

Find a Niche

Before you start building a blog, you're going to need to have your specific niche. A niche is a topic within an industry that you specialize in.

Finding a small niche is going to be part of how easy it will be to monetize your blog and start making money. This is also going to help you along the way when it comes to effectively using affiliate links and advertising products or services.

When you have a niche picked out, you can start looking at the specific target audience you'll be speaking too. This is going to help you determine how you write and produce content.

Once you have a niche picked out then we can start looking at building a website for your blog.

Choosing a Platform

Now that we know your niche and have an idea of who your target audience is, it's time to start building a website. The first step to building a website is choosing a platform to build it through and also a web host to get it online.

If you are looking for the easiest and fastest way to get a blog running than consider using a company that has a combination of both website building and web hosting.

Platforms

There are a ton of companies out there now that help bloggers create their websites. The best-rated sites that have a combination of website building and Webhosting are WordPress and Wix. If you can afford it, you should always hire a professional web developer.

Web Hosting

If you go with a platform that doesn't offer web-hosting than there are some great web-hosting sites out there to use. Blue Host is a great bang for your buck web hosting service. They offer a free domain, free SSL certificates, free basic CDN through Cloudflare.

Build Your Blog

After you choose which platform you want to go through, you can start building your blog. The next step is choosing a name and theme for your blog.

Name

Choosing a good name for your blog is important. You want to choose a name that is easy to remember and spell. People tend to be lazy, so you want to make it as easy as possible for them.

After you have a name for your blog, its time to start designing your site. Most of these platforms allow you to easily build the site yourself with their pre-made themes or you can hire a professional to build it for you.

Themes

If you decide to build one yourself and choose a pre-made theme than we suggest you use a theme builder such as Thrive Theme (what we use) or Elementor Builder. These are excellent theme builder choices that make building a blog website super easy.

A theme builder is better than a static theme because it allows you the flexibility to quickly design your own custom WordPress theme from scratch. Remember, you're building more than just a blog, you're building a brand. So, it's important to have the design flexibility to distinguish your brand.

Include SEO

Search Engine Optimization is what Google and other search engine platforms use to rank websites. This is what's going to allow you or your competitors to appear first in a search result. The better your SEO, the higher your ranking will be.

SEO is something you want to make sure you implement throughout your whole site and it's content. Some website platforms offer SEO services, but you can also do this yourself.

Here are some SEO that you can do yourself while building your website:

  • Include keywords through your site and content
  • Include Alt-text with all of your images
  • Make sure to include text and keywords with your meta descriptions
  • Make sure the website is mobile-friendly.
  • Include page descriptions

SEO is going to help you bring in more viewers and ultimately improve your blog.

Create Content

Now that we have a website, its time to start putting up content. The biggest thing to remember about your content is its value towards the readers.

Valuable Content

The key to having a successful blog is to provide valuable and relevant content. If you provide content that is either non-relevant to your target audience or that isn't valuable information, then your readers will become disinterested in your blog. Create content that solves a problem or provides good information for the reader.

SEO Content

When you create your content, you want to make sure you include SEO in every blog post. This means including keywords and alt-text for your images. It also means creating external and internal links.

Internal links

This is a link that links that to another page on your blog. For example: On the bottom of your page, have a link that connects to your "Contact" page.

External Links

This is when you include a link that goes to another reputable website. This is going to help improve your SEO and potentially drive more traffic back to your blog.

Promote Your Blog

The last part of starting a blog is promoting it. There are a ton of different way that you can promote your blog, here are a couple of great ways -

Social Media

One of the first ways to promote a blog is through social media. With billions of users every day, this is a great way to get your blog in front of more viewers. Use social platforms that your target audience will be using the most.

Guest Blogging

This is another great way to bring in more viewers. Guest blogging is when you write a blog for another relevant site. The key here is to do it with relevant sites. Offer to write blog posts for sites where your target audience is most likely going to see your content and visit your page from it.

Forums and Boards

Browse through Facebook groups and online communities where your target audience might be present. This gives you an opportunity to connect with them and share your valuable content.
